About the KICKR Thru Axle Adapter Kit
Wahoo’s direct-drive KICKR trainers mount your bike without its rear wheel, so the frame needs the right adapters to sit on the trainer. This kit has everything to mount a 12×142 mm or 12×148 mm thru axle bike. You fit the right adapter for your frame, then secure the bike with its own thru axle, just as you would with the rear wheel.
In 2020 several bike brands tightened the thru axle interface on some frames, and those frames don’t sit properly on the original KICKR adapters. Wahoo developed this updated adapter set with those brands. It includes a matching freehub lock nut, so the lock nut on the trainer gets swapped as part of the fit.
What’s included
- 142 mm non-drive side adapter (etched “142” with a direction arrow)
- 148 mm non-drive side adapter (etched “148” with a direction arrow)
- Drive side spin cap (updated design)
- Shimano/HG style freehub lock nut (the longer one)
- SRAM XD/XDR style freehub lock nut (the shorter one)
Your bike’s thru axle isn’t included, because the kit is designed to use the one already on your bike.
Compatibility
Wahoo lists this kit as compatible with:
- KICKR CORE (WFBKTR4), including KICKR CORE Zwift One

Who needs it
- Thru axle bike owners riding road, gravel or mountain bikes with a 12×142 mm or 12×148 mm Boost rear axle.
- Riders with newer frames (2020 onwards) that don’t sit properly on the original KICKR thru axle adapters.
- Anyone missing adapters, whether they were lost in a move, worn or damaged, or didn’t come with a second-hand trainer.
- Households with more than one bike, so the 142 and 148 adapters are both on hand when you swap bikes.
Shopping for a trainer as well? The KICKR Core and KICKR V6 come with quick release and thru axle adapters in the box. Keep this kit on hand as a spare set.
How to fit it
You’ll need a cassette lockring tool, a chain whip, and 14 mm and 17 mm cone wrenches. If you’re not comfortable removing a cassette, your local bike shop can fit it for you.
- Remove the old adapters. Take out the existing non-drive side adapter and the drive side adapter or spin cap.
- Remove the cassette from the trainer with the chain whip and lockring tool.
- Remove the original lock nut with the 17 mm cone wrench.
- Fit the new lock nut. Use the longer Shimano/HG nut on a Shimano HG or Campagnolo-compatible freehub body, or the shorter nut on a SRAM XD/XDR freehub body. Tighten it with the 14 mm cone wrench until snug, about finger tight plus a quarter turn. Don’t over-tighten.
- Refit the cassette.
- Fit the non-drive side adapter for your frame, 142 or 148, into the left side of the trainer with the arrow pointing towards the trainer.
- Fit the drive side spin cap over the lock nut. It spaces the frame away from the cassette, so don’t ride without it.
- Mount the bike. Shift into the smallest cog, take off the rear wheel, and seat the bike on the trainer. Then tighten your thru axle to the bike maker’s specification before you ride.

KICKR Thru Axle Adapter Kit FAQ
- Which KICKR trainers does this kit fit? Wahoo lists KICKR CORE (WFBKTR4, including CORE Zwift One), KICKR MOVE (WFBKTR123), and KICKR v4 2018 (WFBKTR118), V5 2020 (WFBKTR120) and V6 2022 (WFBKTR122).
- Will it fit my 2017 or older KICKR? No. It isn’t compatible with KICKR v3 (2017) or older models.
- Do I need the 142 or the 148 adapter? It depends on your frame’s rear axle spacing. Thru axle road and gravel bikes are usually 12×142 mm, and many mountain bikes use 12×148 mm Boost. Check your frame or hub specs if you’re unsure. Both adapters are in the kit.
- Which lock nut should I use? Use the longer Shimano/HG nut with a Shimano HG or Campagnolo-compatible freehub body, and the shorter nut with a SRAM XD/XDR freehub body.
- Do I use my bike’s own thru axle? Yes. Once the adapters are fitted, you secure the bike with its own thru axle, tightened to the bike maker’s specification.
- My trainer came with thru axle adapters. Why would I need this? To replace adapters that are lost, worn or damaged, or for a 2020-onwards frame that doesn’t sit properly on the original adapters. It’s also handy if you bought a trainer second-hand without them.
- My cassette or chain is rubbing the frame. What’s wrong? This usually means the drive side spin cap isn’t fitted over the lock nut. Stop riding, fit the spin cap, then remount the bike.
- Is this a genuine Wahoo part? Yes. It’s Wahoo’s KICKR Thru Axle Kit, part number WFKICKRTHRUAXLEKIT.
- What else does my KICKR need? If your belt is slipping or worn, the KICKR Drive Belt suits KICKR 2018 and newer. Older 2014 to 2017 KICKRs use the KICKR PowerGrip Belt.
- How fast is shipping? We ship Australia-wide from Australian stock with fast dispatch, and shipping is free on orders over $110.
