SILCA Super Secret Chain Lube in Australia
Super Secret Chain Lube is SILCA’s drip-applied liquid wax. Instead of melting wax in a pot and dipping your chain, you drip it on straight from the bottle. SILCA blends micro-scale wax powders and tungsten disulfide (WS2) into a quick-drying alcohol carrier. The carrier evaporates and leaves a wax coating on the rollers, pins and plates that SILCA describes as “indiscernible from hot melt dipping”.
You can use it as your only chain lube, or as a top-up between hot-wax dips. It’s the original Super Secret formula, sold as “Super Secret Chain Coating” in the red and green bottle.
- Type: drip-on liquid wax with tungsten disulfide (WS2)
- Sizes: 2 oz (59 ml), 4 oz (120 ml) or 8 oz (240 ml)
- Applicator: precision drip tip
- Use on: a clean, dry chain, or a chain that’s already been hot waxed
How to apply Super Secret Chain Lube
- Start with a very clean, dry chain. Strip off factory grease or old lube with a chain degreaser first, then let it dry completely.
- Shake well. The WS2 settles to the bottom of the bottle over time.
- Cross-chain and backpedal. Shift into a cross-chained gear (for example, big ring and big sprocket) and turn the cranks backwards.
- One drop per link. Put one drop on each link as it passes. Don’t wipe off the excess.
- Let it dry. Leave it for at least 12 hours, or 24 hours in cool or humid weather. SILCA suggests applying it after a ride so it’s ready for next time.
- Build it up on a bare chain. If you’re using it on its own, SILCA recommends 3 coats, letting each one dry before the next.
- Re-apply about every 320 km (200 miles), or sooner if the chain gets noisy.
Apply it between 5 and 35 °C. Keep it off disc brake rotors, pads and rim braking surfaces, and read the label and SILCA’s Safety Data Sheet before use.
Storage and temperature
- Store between 5 and 30 °C with the cap on.
- Long periods below freezing make it thicker. SILCA says it still works, but you may need to clear the tip with a needle.
- Shake before every use.

Super Secret Chain Lube FAQ
- What is SILCA Super Secret Chain Lube? It’s a drip-on liquid wax chain lube. Wax powders and tungsten disulfide are carried in a quick-drying alcohol base, which evaporates and leaves a wax coating on the chain.
- Do I need to clean my chain first? Yes. The chain needs to be very clean and dry, with factory grease and old lube removed. The coating won’t bond properly to a dirty or oily chain.
- How much should I use? One drop per link while turning the cranks backwards. Don’t wipe off the excess.
- How long does it take to dry? At least 12 hours, or 24 hours in cool or humid weather. Applying it after a ride means it’s ready for your next one.
- How many coats does a bare chain need? SILCA recommends 3 coats when it’s your only lube, letting each coat dry first.
- How often should I re-apply it? About every 320 km (200 miles), or when the chain starts to get noisy. SILCA also suggests a coat after a wet ride to help push water out of the chain.
- Can I use it on a hot-waxed chain? Yes. It’s designed to top up a hot-waxed chain between dips. SILCA says regular top-ups can extend the life of your hot-wax coating.
- Why do I need to shake it? The tungsten disulfide settles to the bottom of the bottle over time, so shake it well each time.
- What temperatures can I use it in? Apply between 5 and 35 °C and store between 5 and 30 °C. If it has been very cold for a long time it can thicken, but it still works.
- Which size should I get? The 2 oz (59 ml) bottle is a good way to try chain waxing. The 4 oz (120 ml) and 8 oz (240 ml) bottles suit regular use or more than one bike.
